Night of the Demon (1957)
Member Rating:
Based on Montague R. James' classic shiver tale Casting the Runes, Curse of the Demon (aka Night of the Demon) is an exercise in psychological terror. American Professor Dana Andrews investigates a devil-worshipping cult active in England. The cult has apparently been responsible for more than one death in recent months, and it's all the handiwork of the group's leader, an Aleister Crowley type played by Niall MacGinnis. When Andrews comes too close to MacGinnis for comfort, the devil worshipper slips a ancient parchment into Andrews' research files. The document carries a curse that will mean death for whoever possesses it. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a true classic of the genre. Strong characters, a well-told story, and evil in the form of a sinister devil cult , set against a background of English countryside combine to provide a positively great, classic B&W horror film. Excellent!

This is a very erie movie if you love classic horror films. The beast may be laughable in todays world but I bet the audience in the theatre were scared. I wish they would show these classic horror films back on the big screen today. A good movie to watch late at night. ~ Susan L.

The minute I saw the black and white film I thought it was going to be awful. Quite the contrary!! I was totally absorbed in this film. Then I realized why...it was because the acting was great, (there were no vapid 20 something year old girls who can't act their way out of a paper bag) the setting so authentic (no Hollywood sets here) that I felt like I could feel the mist on my face and the smoke in my throat. And a plot right out of a screenwriting workbook that kept the pace moving fast and with surprises at every turn. Don't miss it.
