This film transcends it's obviously low budet to provide non-stop suspense and action. Though full of stereotypes and marred by a wide array of inappropriate, non-existant, or phony accents, and obvious rear projection shots, it's still manages to be exciting. Cinematography is noirish and first rate. Actors capable of playing convincing Nazi's must have been in short supply in 1943; Howard De Silva is brutish and hissable enough but speaks in his usual New York accent; the actor playing the German commander not only lacks the zealous menace the role calls for, but speaks in a very disconcerting midwestern (American that is) voice. Screenplay is by renound and later blacklisted writer Waldo Salt.

Although not as exciting as modern war movies, this wasn't bad. Very typical film of the genre and time.

This is a black and white 1943 propaganda film. The transfer to DVD was excellent and the audio was good. I even enjoyed the soundtrack which, I believe, consisted of many French nationalist tunes. Howard Da Silva once again played an evil womanizing Nazi and AnnaBella (Tyrone Power's wife in the real world) looked beautiful. The plot was historically inaccurate and full of holes. John Sutton was selected to go to occupied France because he spoke French but the movie was shot entirely in English. Knowing the Brits I guess it is possible that they would risk an entire commando squad to get Sutton into France. While the commandos shoot it out with the Nazis Sutton goes over the side of the boat unseen with his bicycle and later survives while being chased by two Germans on bicycles. Do we really believe that the Germans would build a secret important factory near the coast of France? Do we really believe that the Brits would even bomb France? La Marseillaise!
