Tomorrow (1972)

Tomorrow (1972)
Member Rating:
Horton Foote was the adapting hand behind this superlative black and white filmization of the 1939 William Faulkner story Tomorrow. Framed in flashback, the film explores the personal reasons that semi-literate farmer Robert Duvall is the lone jury holdout in the guilty verdict for a young killer on trial. We learn in a gradually unfolding fashion that the boy is the son of Olga Bellin, a woman with whom Duvall had had an intense personal involvement some twenty years earlier. Foote's script had previously been utilized on a Playhouse 90 TV version of Tomorrow, which starred Sterling Hayden. Universally regarded as the best-ever film adaptation of a Faulkner work, Tomorrow was in danger of vanishing without truly finding its audience, when it was given a well received TV premiere on PBS on December 17, 1984--twelve years after the film was made. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a beautiful film, sensitively realized. This is one of those rare films that stays with you for a long time after. I highly recommend it - if you like Robert Duval don't miss it. A truly moving story of a simple man whose love for a child is boundless. Note: It is slower paced with less dialogue and action that is mostly internal (which are bonuses to me). Bring tissues!

I was captured from the beginning by this amazing film. Duval was excellent, as he always is, but the stunning black and white photography was what made the film.

This film adaption of the story Tomorrow and Tomorrow by writer William Faulkner (a favorite of mine) stars Robert Duvall in the lead character of Jackson Fentry, a lonely solitary man in Mississippi working as a caretaker until the day a pregnant woman finds her way to his door and changes his life. A simple yet beautiful story by Faulkner that was done quite well in this low budget film from nearly 40 yrs ago. If a fan of Faulkner's work or of Duvall and interested in his earlier work this odd but enjoyable little film might be for you.
