Song of Songs (1935)

Song of Songs (1935)
The great Yiddish Art Theatre luminary Samuel Goldenberg was the star of Shir Hashirim (Song of Songs). As near as can be determined, the story was another "crisis of faith" yarn, with Goldenberg and his co-stars alternately suffering and rejoicing in song. There was also an elemental of sexual intrigue, with vampish Doris Weissman slinking her way across the screen. Contemporary film critics were disappointed by the film's shoddy production values and poor direction, especially when compared to other Yiddish productions of the era. Likewise, Goldenberg himself was chastised for not toning down his broad stage mannerisms for the more intimate medium of film. Poorly received upon its first release (even by Jewish audiences), Shir Hashirim has seemingly disappeared, but like other Yiddish films of its era may well turn up some day in a European archive. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
