The boy is convinced that he can save his pet if only he can bring it to the crypt of St. Francis of Assisi. However, the Father Superior (Raf Vallone) will not allow the tomb to be so desecrated. Pepino's only hope lies in the intervention of kindly Father Damico (Vittorio de Sica).
