This is a tragic story of two dogs who are victimized by sadistic experimentation under the guise of "medical research." This film contains no offensive language or nudity, but the subject matter is inappropriate for young children, hence the PG13 rating. This is a good film to generate discussion and help educate older kids and teenagers on the issue of animal experimentation, but the film does have a strong anti-research bias. There are no captions or subtitles available on this DVD, and the rural British accents can be difficult for my North American ears to understand, but the story is simple enough to carry itself with the images. The animation was okay for its time and place, but nothing fantastic. The soundtrack was professional and appropriate, but nothing remarkable. I would have liked the film better if it had a happier ending, but despite being somewhat depressing, it was still entertaining and worth watching.

This movie was haunting and a compelling story of Research Animals escaping from their enslavement and abuse, attempting to break free and find a real home and master. This movie was as dark and uncompromising as the novel by Richard Adams. Throughout the movie you hoped that Snitter and Rowlf would find a way out, but it was against all odds. This isn't like Watership Down, which was written before this book, although Adams used real life English/Scottish countryside places, which were accurately depicted. This is NOT a children's movie and is very much adult in nature, especially the gritty story and ending. I am saddened to think that things like this were done and are still being done to animals, especially man's best friend - they deserve so much better.
