The McKenzie Break (1970)

The McKenzie Break (1970)
Member Rating:
The McKenzie Break is an unusual POW escape drama in that the would-be escapees are German prisoners, held in a Scottish camp. When a Luftwaffe pilot is murdered in the compound, British major Ian Hendrey investigates. He suspects that the killing is tied in with a complex escape plan, engineered by German commander Helmut Griem. Before the inevitable break, the prisoners form into the sort of separate factions and pressure groups that fomented the Nazi upheaval in Germany in the first place. Based on a novel by Sidney Shelley, The McKenzie Break was actually filmed in Ireland rather than Scotland. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is an excellent dramatization of a prisonerof war camp escape made in 1970 with the same flavor as the Great Escape which was made seven years earlier. Helmut Griem andthe cast of german officer pows do justice to their roles as well as the British soldiers and their leaders. Bian Kieth heads up the investigation into the pow plot and is as always believable in his casual manner..I give it 31/2 stars.

Stylish little movie, filmed in the dreary overcast of Ireland .Two fisted Brian "Uncle Bill" Keith vs. Helmut Griem's suave, but ruthless U-Boat commander. WARNING: The romping, stomping beerhall style song that the German POWs sing will stick in your head for at least a full ten days.

Opposite of other P.o.W. movies, this one takes the German side in WWII. The movie is best described as a cross between "The Great Escape's" prison break plot and the gritiness of "Hart's War" but with Germany and the Allies switching roles in the movie. The plot is actually a very intriguing battle of the wits between two people which keeps the movie fresh. All in all, it was a good movie. However, the British and German accents in the movie can be hard to follow at times so the use of the English subtitles was very helpful.
