An intelligent, eccentric high school senior devotes his life to indulging the every whim of the beautiful girl he adores in this quirky, dark-humored comedy. Roddy McDowall plays Alan Musgrave, an odd duck who immediately falls for the school's new student, Barbara Ann Greene (Tuesday Weld). Using his quick wits, he helps her win acceptance amongst the popular girls and a cushy job in the principal's office. Never demanding anything in return, Alan doesn't even complain when she falls for an upper-class college boy, and he does everything he can to bring the two together. However, as time passes, this seemingly well-intentioned dedication spins out of control, with results that become increasingly bizarre and even potentially fatal. The irreverent attitude and erratic tone may be an acquired taste, but the film's audacious humor and idiosyncratic approach have won it a cult following. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Admittedly, not very high brow entertainment. But, as a sendup of Beach Movies of the era, I enjoyed it a lot. The contrast in beach fashion then and now is lots of fun to study. If you watch it for that, and the offbeat humor, it is an achievement. Not spectacular, but good. Google...I read a little history about the movie before watching it, that helped me appreciate that it was groundbreaking for it's time. Most of all, Tuesday Weld is always fun to see in any movie. And Playboy conterfold Jo Collins is eye candy for the ages.

A deeply oddball, one of a kind film. Filmmaker Axelrod described it as "Love Finds Andy Hardy"™ meets "Dr. Strangelove". As good a sum up as any. Part deeply witty, very dark, surreal satire of American life (very good), part lowbrow wacky comedy (not as good) part parody of the early 60s Beach Party movies (starts funny but burns out), and partly serious drama about how screwed up families are (quite strong considering it is in the middle of all the silliness). Like Kurt Vonnegut in terms of its constant, head snapping shifts in tone. Roddy McDowell (almost 40 at the time!) plays a high school senior, a genius/puck/gay? figure, who is obsessed (but not sexually) with making the dreams of a hot, seemingly vacuous blond (Tuesday Weld) come true. Both are wonderful. Along the way there is murder, heavy hints of incest, and lots of other American family fun. Not all of it works, but terrific when it clicks, and gets big points for being so brave and unique.
