The Lawless Legion (1929)

The Lawless Legion (1929)
By 1929, strapping cowboy Ken Maynard had become First National's ace western star. The former stunt rider was being afforded superior direction (from Harry Joe Brown) and solid supporting casts, but it was all about to end -- at least for the time being. The studio was about to be taken over by Warner Bros. and sound, still on the primitive Vitaphone stage, made outdoor adventures a dicey proposition at best. Maynard got the heave-ho by First National following this ordinary western in which Ken goes undercover as a beef buyer in order to catch the gang responsible for stealing the area's cattle. Happily, Ken Maynard returned in fine fettle to Universal, where he became the first singing cowboy. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
