Jeremy (1973)

Jeremy (1973)
Member Rating:
Robby Benson went from journeyman juvenile player to full-fledged star in 1973's Jeremy. Benson plays the titular 15-year-old musician who falls in love with fellow high schooler Susan (Glynnis O'Connor), an aspiring dancer; he is supported throughout the relationship by two loving, understanding parents. Director Arthur Barron's stylistic flourishes (such as shifting-focus close-ups, zoom-ins, and "groovy" atmosphere shots) firmly place this picture in the '70s. This marked the first of a handful of Benson/O'Connor teamings; the stars reportedly dated each other for a time in real life. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

My rating is generous and subjective. I can not really argue that this is a "good" movie. A lot of it feels awkward and even amateurish. But this look at teen-age first love speaks to me very personally (shy west side NYC kid falls for beautiful WASP girl only to lose her). This was both my teen-age fantasy of what first romance and sexuality should be, and a reflection of much of my own specific experience. So even such cringe worthy elements as Robby Benson and Glynnis O"™Connor singing not-very-good pop odes to love on the soundtrack can't keep this from making me remember and cry. Talking to others of my generation I was fascinated to find I was not alone in having a heart/head split in reaction to the film.
