Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (1975)

Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (1975)
Member Rating:
This filmed version of the popular (1800 performances!) off-Broadway musical by Eric Blau and Mort Schumann incorporates 26 songs written by Belgian-entertainer Jacques Brel. Three actors--Elly Stone, Mort Schuman and Joe Masiell--interpret Brel's sometimes angry, sometimes poignant ballads with strength and compassion. In the movie, the three are brought together when they seek refuge from a rainstorm. The songs are accompanied by vignettes which highlight the imagery and story in them. Jacques Brel himself sings a melancholy composition at intermission time. It's ironic that this film was produced by the American Film Theatre; Brel disliked America and refused ever to set foot in the country. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This was terrible. The songs were not in French and the woman's voice hurt my ears she was so off key. It was just an awful bunch of amatures running around the garage. Throw this away Bluckbuster.

Terrible! Vulgar. Hard to understand. Couldn't finish it.

But regretfully, this production of Jacques Brel is Alive... is so dated that it doesn't "brussel" anymore, it hurts to see it. I wish they'd done a simpler and therefore more abstract and universal staging of the songs, more like in the theatre. The three main singer's interpretations are quite good specially Mort Shuman. Elly Stone singin Marike is hairaising, but she slaughters Caroussel with music and singer being at odds. The hippies gave no extra dimension. In general the production tried to be so 70's and "avant garde" it lost "universalite." My recomendation, get the CD instead.
