The High Commissioner (1968)

The High Commissioner (1968)
Member Rating:
A police investigator is forced to rely on the man he's been instructed to apprehend in this cold war thriller. Sir James Quentin (Christopher Plummer) is a high level negotiator with the British government who is approached by Scobie Malone (Rod Taylor), an Australian detective who has been instructed to arrest Quentin in connection with the murder of his first wife 25 years earlier. Quentin calmly asks Malone if he could wait until he completes his work at a diplomatic conference, and Malone agrees; Quentin even allows Malone to stay at his home with his second wife Shelia (Lilli Palmer). Malone's assignment soon proves to be more complicated (and dangerous) than he expected when he has to save Quentin from an assassination attempt. Quentin must protect a fellow diplomat also targeted by gunmen, and Malone learns that Shelia has a deadly secret. The High Commissioner was also released under the title Nobody Runs Forever. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Excellent locations, set and scenery, and generally fine acting by everyone involved, from Leo McKern sporting a god-awful blonde dye job through to Rod Sterling as the straight-shooting outback officer. However, this film's script is not quite a policier, and not quite a tragedy, and not quite a noir, and not quite a spy thriller. All these not-quite's probably mean that it is more realistic and full of realism than anything else, but that means it is also less satisfying as a spectacle as a result.

This would have been a good movie except for the Lili Palmer role..she was too old for the part and didn't seem appropriate as the wife of the young and dashing Christopher Plummer..plus her part wasn't clear and the ending wasn't explained..the rest of the cast was ok especially Rod Taylor..and of course the smooth debonair Mr. Plummer who would soon be the lead in the Sound of Music. 21/2 stars!

This is a badly written and trite move with no real movement. Its a shame becvause Christopher Plummer is a first rate actor.
