Hello Down There (1969)

When irascible boss T.R. Hollister (Jim Backus) threatens to pull the plug on an underwater environmental living project, employee Fred Miller (Tony Randall) and his wife, Vivian (Janet Leigh), take their family down in the deep to live for 30 days. With all the modern conveniences of a home on land, the family even invites a rock & roll band to get down and record. Merv Griffin (himself) arranges an underwater interview for his television show while Mel Cheever (Ken Berry) schemes to get Fred's job back on dry land. Two of the Miller kids, Lorrie (Kay Cole) and Tommy (Gary Tigerman), join three others (Richard Dreyfuss, Roddy McDowall, and Lou Wagner) in the rock band. Friendly dolphins fend of shark attacks as the land sharks try to scuttle the underwater project in this family film. Music is provided by Jeff Barry. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This movie is like a cross between "Flipper" and "the Brady Bunch", and not suprisingly since the director was Ivan Tors, the creator of "Flipper" and numerous other animal movies and TV shows from the 60's era. It's really silly, but cute, likeable, and full of hilarious period content, and fond faces from movies and sitcoms of mid-60's/early 70's. Harold and the Hang-ups are at least as good as the Cowsills, and Roddy McDowell is at his nehru-jacketed best!

I like Tony Randall, Janet Leigh and Jim Backus. I like old movies and I like some pretty silly movies. But, Hello Down There is just another dumb 60's comedy. All the characters are played as caricatures with the actors performing as if rehearsing in front of younger relatives. Could only watch the first 15 minutes or so to the point where the family arrives in the underwater home. It didn't improve so out it goes. Just too simple-minded for my tastes. But I got the feeling Happy Days and Brady Bunch fans would like it.

Saw this 30 years ago and never forgot it. It is perfect for kids of all ages- gets them to use their imagination while very entertaining!
