Chocolat (1988)
Member Rating:
Set in French Colonial Africa, Chocolat is told from the viewpoint of 8-year-old Cecile Ducasse. With no other frame of reference, the innocent Ducasse accepts the subjugation of the black natives by the white colonists as the natural order of things. The girl grows gradually aware of the social iniquities about her, but only in retrospect (the film is related in flashback, narrated by the grown-up heroine) does she fully realize just how cruel and wrong-headed the entire colonial system had been. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a good story about french colonialism. The subjugation of the black servants is indeed cruel and harsh. One cannot watch this film, however, without being impressed with the strength and dignity of caracter of the young black who runs of the household of his masters. It is interesting to see the situation through the eyes of the young girl, and later, when she returns as an adult.

A good film about childhood, that brings a remote place in the 1950's--and a now-lost form of power-vividly to life.

True story of a young woman's childhood in West Africa in a Colonial outpost. The story concentrates on the strong definitions of the classes there at that time and the difficulties of living in a racist society. We see this all through a child's eyes which is interesting. This is a slow moving and quite sedate film however and at times there simply wasn't enough to truly hold my interest.
