This is a movie not to be missed. The DVD I received was choppy, and the subtitles went by so quickly that I often had to freeze the frame so I could read them. But, the movie itself was more than worth it. "The Guide" is not simply a title, but an allegory. The guide himself begins as a decent, but shallow young man. He exhibits many weaknesses, but by following his better instincts, becomes a spiritual guide in spite of his many missteps. The film itself deals frankly and critically with the status of women, caste, and suffocating morals in Indian society in a way which is quite breathtaking for an Indian film produced over 25 years ago. The DVD production could have been improved in many ways. For example, there was no translation whatsoever of the many songs. Still, the spiritual and entertainment value overcomes these weaknesses.
