Good and Evil (1921)

Good and Evil (1921)
This European spectacular claimed that its star, Lucy Doraine, was supported by a cast of 10,000! Doraine herself plays several roles, first as the Duchess Vera Ormonde, who takes pity on Pierre Danton (Alphonse Fryland), an escaped convict who claims to be a victim of circumstance. After hiding him from the police, she helps him get a new start in life. He goes to Monte Carlo, but loses all his money and falls into a state of semi-consciousness. While in this fuzzy frame of mind, he is visited by Fate, who claims not to be the one responsible for the world's troubles -- it is Temption, Intrigue and Passion that are the problems. Then Fate goes on to illustrate this in historical scenes, including ancient Japan, eighteenth century France, and Persia. Each time, the Duchess plays the role opposite Pierre, as a geisha, a marchioness and a "daughter of the Orient." One would think that after all of this, Pierre would wind up with the Duchess, but after he comes to, he seeks out the love of an American girl, Bessie Winthrop (Madeline Nagy). ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
