Guld og Grønne Skove (1958)

Guld og Grønne Skove (1958)
A harbinger, in a minor way, of his Academy Award-winning Babettes Gæstebud (Babette's Feast), Danish director Gabriel Axel again takes up a particular fear of any small country: the dread, real or imagined, of foreign invasion. In the Karen Blixen adaptation, it was exotic foreign foods, mores, and values that alienated a deeply backwards culture. Guld og Grønne Skove, an outright comedy, describes the growing apprehension of a small Danish island about to be invaded by oil-hungry American capitalists. It's all done very tongue-in-cheek, but the message is muddled. On one hand, the film makes fun of the noisy uncouth Yankees, but it is insinuated that the overly self-sufficient Danes might benefit from some refreshing foreign influence. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
