Get Carter stars Michael Caine as Jack Carter, a powerful British gangster out for blood. His brother has been murdered in Newcastle, prompting Carter to declare a one-man war on other racketeers. Carter must also get his niece out of the life she is leading as an actress in pornographic films. Now that he is a loose cannon, Carter must be eliminated. Get Carter is typical action fare of the 1970s in that there are virtually no "good guys" -- in fact, the assassin is probably the most likable character in the piece! Originally rated X for violence and female nudity, Get Carter was reclassified as an R after subsequent crime films became even more bloodthirsty. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Get Carter, the stylish 1971 crime film starring Michael Caine as a London gangster, has beat out James Bond and the Monty Python troupe in a ranking of the 50 best British films by Total Film magazine. (October 2004) "Caine's character is now seen as one of the greatest anti-heroes of all time," Total Film magazine editor Matt Mueller told the Associated Press. "It has stood the test of time and marks the pinnacle of his career." In the list , Get Carter was tops, followed by 1946's A Matter of Life and Death, starring David Niven as a wartime aviator. The 1996 film Trainspotting, which stars Ewan McGregor in a tale about Scottish youth and heroin addiction, took the third spot.

I saw that the book that this movie was based on was called something like "Jack Comes Home." It might have been called "Home Gets Jack," because the real villain of this movie is Newcastle. The grim place spawned the men and women who prey on each other and the director has shot the movie so well that we understand the terrible violence that comes from such an environment. The acting is also first rate. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and I highly recommend it, though it is very sad.

You need to see this if you're a fan of Michael Caine. This is a beloved classic British film.
