The Frogmen (1951)

The Frogmen (1951)
Member Rating:
In this World War II drama, Richard Widmark plays Lt. Cmdr. John Lawrence, a strict navy commander assigned to replace the popular senior officer of a group of underwater demolition divers -- better known as frogmen. Lawrence tightens the discipline of this brave but fiercely independent group of underwater warriors, winning few friends in the process. The unpopular officer proves his worth in front of his men by neutralizing a live torpedo at the risk of his own life. The principal attraction of The Frogmen is its underwater photography, which would have been twice as effective in black-and-white. An intelligent, low-key wartime adventure, The Frogmen is weakened only by the excessive "Brooklynese" comedy of Harvey Lembeck. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie hit it on the spot, the real deal. This was the job of UDTs prior to evolving into SEALs. No exaggerations here or hollywood fantasy.

Classic WW II movie from the 50's. The movie is in black and white - which adds to the classic nature of the movie. It is a good movie that shows the difference in leadership between 2 commanders and how they interact with their men. A movie that I enjoyed - but I do like the classic war movies.

This was a very good documentary-type movie of the beginning of Special Forces groups (demolition experts) at the end of WWII. No one could have done a better job of showing the human side of a Lt. Cmdr's position than Richard Widmark. Even though Robt. Wagner's name was listed in the credits, his part must have been cut out. Never saw him. Dana Andrews was great in his part also. Very informative movie.
