A Delicate Balance (1973)

A Delicate Balance (1973)
Member Rating:
A Delicate Balance is the 1973 film adaptation of Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Katharine Hepburn and Paul Scofield play an old married couple, Agnes and Tobias, who much prefer to be alone. Each time someone visits them, their "delicate balance" is threatened. The first intruder is Agnes' inebriated sister, Claire (Kate Reid). The next is their much-divorced daughter, Julia (Lee Remick). The limit is reached when well-meaning friends Harry (Joseph Cotten) and Edna (Betsy Blair) show up unexpectedly and threaten to stay forever. In keeping with the austerity of the other American Film Theatre presentations, director Tony Richardson eschews his usual cinematographic pyrotechnics here. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I hate to say this but......no. All the most coveted talent is here: Paul Scofield, Katharine Hepburn, Joseph Cotten, Lee Remick, Tony Richardson, Edward Albee......and, yet, it amounts to "not enough". Hepburn is rightfully beloved, BUT, unfortunately, is not talented enough to carry a play of this stature. Tony Richardson's talent lies more in cinema than plays and no one's acting styles match! How is it that Katharine Hepburn with her flat vowels ("....dahling.." / "....doesn't mahta...") and cool New England patrician persona is even remotely related to the woman who plays her sister in this production, who is all-American in accessibility and angst?!! This production is done in the style of a theatre-before-the-camera production and the dialogue is longer than life with very stilted (read: non-existent) camera work......it's just the driest of productions. I lasted 20 minutes before hitting the "stop" button.

I really wanted to like this movie. A stellar cast. but it was so obviously a play and not a movie that it never came across as being anything remotely suspenseful. great disappointment
