Curse of the Vampires (1970)

Curse of the Vampires (1970)
Member Rating:
Made in the Philippines, this effective tale of vampire family values begins with prodigal son Eddie Garcia's return to his father's creepy estate, where he is soon transformed into a vampire after being bitten by his own mother, whom his paranoid father had been keeping in the cellar. He in turn passes on the curse to his fiancée, and later his sister (Amalia Fuentes), who had only recently lost her own beau. Fuentes' blood-drinking pursuits in the surrounding village are eventually traced back to the source, and the family becomes the target of a group of torch-bearing vigilantes. This sequel to The Blood Drinkers is more complex than its pulpy predecessor, thanks to an abundance of religious symbolism stressing the power of faith over the forces of darkness. Also known as Creatures of Evil. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

There is some decent cinematography and imaginative use of lighting in this tale of filipino vampires. The atmosphere of the film is defeated by poor dubbing; in some places on the disc the audio quality is so bad you can't make out what the people are saying. Because of this it's hard to tell if the actors are giving good performances or not. The plot veers unsteadily between the horror elements and the romantic bond between the two leads. The ending is a bit surprising and moves it away from horror to romance which is why some releases of the film were entitled Whisper to the Wind. Not great, but different anyway.

This was an ok vampire film. These vampires do show their reflections in the mirrors. The father who appeared to be on his deathbed at the start of the film always has enough strength to use his whip on his vampiric wife. I felt the movie was never really over when it was over. Never really got started on a solid ground. ~ Susan L.
