Excellent drama centering around the birth of the State of Israel. Kirk Douglas does an excellent job portraying Colonel Mickey Marcus and his effort to organize the Israel Defence Forces.

How can a movie with Kirk Douglas, Yul Brenner, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Angie Dickinson, and Topol possibly suck? Ask Melville Shavelson. This movie is plodding, boring, and tries soooo hard to turn the real-life adventures of Malcolm McDonald into something interesting (albeit in the 138 minute kind of 1960's epic way). Total bomb. Save yourself the nightmare. There are a few good scenes, but the rest is woeful. Seems more like a movie from 1936 than one from 1966. Terrible special effects, fake Arabs, fake Jews. Awful in any religion.

While the movie is quite long, it is definitely worth it! The movie chronicles Israel's struggle for independence and the American who helped them. Great acting by Kirk Douglas and wonderful cameos by Yul Brynner, John Wayne, and Frank Sinatra. Definitely worth watching!
