Boomerang! (1947)

Boomerang! (1947)
Member Rating:
Boomerang, directed by Elia Kazan, is a chilling film noir, the true story about the murder of a priest, the subsequent arrest and trial of a jobless drifter, and the efforts of young state's attorney Henry Harvey (Dana Andrews) to uncover the truth. Closely based on the actual 1924 murder of Fr. Hubert Dahme in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the film was directed by the young Elia Kazan in a highly effective, semi-documentary style. Kazan shot most of the film on location, using high-contrast cinematography and an extremely mobile camera to create a palpable sense of urgency. The screenplay, expertly crafted by Richard Murphy received an Academy Award nomination. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

Though this is over 60 years old, it's still compelling. The acting style is a little bit different than today's, but no less credible. The fact that it's based on a true story makes it all the more compelling, and politics doesn't appear to have changed a lot since then.

This movie was directed by Elia Kazan and is filmed in and around the actual area where this real life crime suspense occurred. It is loaded with marvelous actors and actresses and is truly an inspiring story -- which is filled with surprisingly sophisticated forensics for a movie made over 60 years ago. It is a superb, well-written and tightly-acted film that should be seen by every appreciator of crime noir.

I'm a fan of Director Elia Kazan because of his films America, America, Splendor in the Grass, On the Waterfront, and A Streetcar Named Desire. However, Boomerang! being one of his earlier efforts, does not measure up to his aforementioned film triumphs. Jane Wyatt as Dana Andrews' housewife is apparently the paradigm for June Cleaver in that she sits around home all day in full makeup and heels. Andrews is his usual formal, expressionless self. This was a waste of my valuable time.
