Billy Jack Goes to Washington (1977)
Member Rating:
The fourth film starring Tom Laughlin as Billy Jack, Billy Jack Goes To Washington was a loose remake of Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. The story begins with Billy receiving a pardon for the trumped-up charges that put him behind bars in The Trial Of Billy Jack. To curry favor with youth and minority voters, Billy is appointed to a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate. However, while Billy is told to not makes waves, he discovers Washington D.C. is a hotbed of rampant corruption, and he makes it his mission to bring honesty and justice back to our government. As with his other Billy Jack vehicles, Tom Laughlin wrote and directed the film as well as playing the title role; his wife Delores Taylor also appears again as Jean Roberts, and E.G. Marshall and Lucie Arnaz round out the supporting cast. Billy Jack Goes To Washington never received a theatrical release outside of a few scattered preview screenings, though Laughlin himself recently released the film on home video. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I really enjoyed Tom Laughlin in Billy Jack, but he is a fish out of water in this film. Part of the problem is that I could not help comparing him to Jimmy Stewart in this remake. Tom is no Jimmy Stewart and should not have tackled a part where comparisons would be made. Save your time and watch Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

It sorrows me greatly to have to state this, as I loved Billy Jack -- I probably seen it 50 times by now. But this is a film that should never have been made. As another reviewed, the original "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" was a thousand times better. Just one point, out of hundreds I could make: In Mr. Smith there was a plausable reason for the Govenor to appoint him to the Senate. In Billy Jack I was lost as to why the Govenor would do so, his 'reasons' were weak at best and, well leave it at that. It is the only DVD I have come very close to stopping and sending back without finishing.

This movie is more than the sum of its parts with several good quotes, a good commentary track, and it make an admirable attempt to show everyone what is going on in DC. If you love freedom, then you must learn about how to save America because it is the last best chance for Liberty and Sovereignty for all. 'We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth', Abe Lincoln. Please, if you don't care, who will? The future is not written yet...
