Henry Walthall was riding high on the glowing reviews he received for his role of the Little Colonel in Birth of a Nation, so it's a bit surprising that he decided to appear in this slapdash drama. When his wife is unfaithful, it sours Dr. Guy Hartwell (Walthall) against all women. But years later he adopts an orphan, Beulah (Joyce Moore). Although his sister treats the girl like a drudge, Hartwell finds himself falling in love with her. Beulah, however, longs for a young man from the orphanage, Eugene, who turns out to have a less than honorable nature. Hartwell travels up north while Beulah becomes a school teacher. An epidemic of scarlet fever breaks out in the doctor's home town, and Beulah, who manages to escape infection, becomes a nurse to help take care of the ill. Hartwell hears of the outbreak and returns home to help. Eugene shows up and accuses the two of having an affair.
