Axe (1977)
Member Rating:
Released originally under the title Lisa, Lisa, this seedy murder-fest was later re-titled during drive-in circulation then again for its video release in 1985 as The California Axe Massacre to capitalize on the hype of another new arrival to video, Tobe Hooper's cult classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The film itself (actually filmed in North Carolina, not California) has little in common with Hooper's hit; the bloody revenge scenario is more reminiscent of Wes Craven's Last House on the Left. It involves a gang of grimy fugitives who hole up in the rural abode of a pretty but unstable young woman (Leslie Lee) and proceed to abuse her and her grandfather. Of course, things get out of hand from there, and the hoods kill the old fogey, which brings gory retribution as the sweet young thing brandishes the title implement. Painfully cheap-looking, this tawdry exploiter is too slow-moving to sustain the interest of chop-em-up fans who might be lured by the title. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Watch out renting this one. I tried to rent the classic horror film entitled "Axe", which all of these reviews are about, and which the synopsis is about, however I was sent "Axe" from 2006 which is a horrible strait to DVD cr*pfest. Beware.

A good little low budget fan boy film. No gore, no rape so I don't know why it's on the nasties list. The story is original. Three criminals on the run hide out in a cabin and mess around with Lisa and her paralyzed grandfather. The acting was good and very well written, very funny. Definitely should be seen by cult film enthusiasts.

There great movies, good movies and then there are those best forgotten. Such is the case with "Axe". It stinks from start to finish; low-budget, talentless cast, weak storyline, bad effects, boring. Something about a crazy girl who tends to her invalid father who reacts violently when three criminals decide to hide out at her farm house and rape her. But who cares? The acting is atrocious, worse than the crime the girl commits anyway. If you made people watch this, they could sue for cruel and unusual punishment. I highly recommend you avoid this one. Obviously made by folks who have no clue how to tell an interesting story on film.
