Respected actor Paddy Considine moves to the director's chair for the first time with this emotionally powerful drama. Joseph (Peter Mullan) is a short-tempered alcoholic with a violent streak and just enough sense to know his life has gone terribly wrong. After getting in a fight with three men during a drunken bender, Joseph stumbles into a thrift shop run by Hannah (Olivia Colman). Joseph tosses random insults at Hannah for her strong religious convictions and desire to help others, but as he gets to know her better, Joseph develops a grudging admiration for Hannah. His feelings grow stronger when he learns just how dysfunctional Hannah's home life is -- she's married to James (Eddie Marsan), who has been subjecting her to humiliating physical and emotional abuse for years. Eventually, Hannah works up the courage to leave James, and Joseph takes her in. Tyrannosaur was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Sometimes, a movie surprises me. Usually I avoid violent films. But I have always been interested in Peter Mullan as an actor and decided to give his latest movie a try. Fierce and violent--just like the tyrannosaurus dinosaur-his character is also capable of love and compassion. The story reminds me of Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino." In retrospect, however, I should have looked to see if English subtitles were available, as the heavy Irish and Scottish accents were sometimes hard to follow.

Depressing little drama in the British/Irish kitchen-sink genre, but excellent performances and competant direction more than compensate for all the doom and gloom. A little hard to watch at times though and not for everyone, but lovers of good acting will appreciate it.

This is a sick film. Joseph, drunk, raging, kicks his barking dog. He decapitates his neighbor's dog when ruffians tease him mad & attempts to hide in Hannah shop. A devout Christian, she prays for him & he mocks her. James, her husband, finds her asleep, pees on her & calls her a slug. He beats & rapes her in disgust. These raging men are unable to communicate except by hurting, demeaning, insulting, attacking. When Hannah kills her husband, Joseph insists she face Justice for James' murder. Joseph now, redeemed, walks free after a visit to Hannah, jailed for James' murder. Justice? Paddy Considine, directed a film so offensive to Decency and Humanity, it made me sick. Wish I could have given it Negative stars.
