American Experience: Stonewall Uprising (2011)
Member Rating:
This historical documentary tells the story of the infamous Sonewall Uprising -- a police raid launched on a Mafia-run gay bar in Greenwich Village in the early '60s -- not for its ties to the Mafia, but for its ties to the gay community. Saddled with prejudice and oppression at every other turn in conservative society, the gays and lesbians did something unprecedented in response to the raid, by fighting back. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

In its 23 years on the air, The American Experience has, slowly but VERY surely, been creating a SUPERB mosaic of Americas past, present and future with its WONDERFULLY produced and researched docs (they only do 6-8 episodes per season, so it takes time...there are SO many stories to be told). This one can stand with their best...ALL of the pain, the passion, and the PRIDE has made it to the screen. And speaking of pride...as a fan of the series since it came on the air, and as a gay man, Ive GOT to say this: THANK YOU PBS! I watched this doc and had to keep pinching myself. In my book, WE ARE NOW A PART OF THE AMERICAN MOSAIC. I actually HAVE lived long enough to see it happen! And it feels GOOD. REAL good.

It was interesting. What I thought was also, interesting was an interview with a gay rights advocate saying (in the 1970's) that gays did not what to marry and raise children.
