Van Gogh (1991)
Member Rating:
Running nearly three hours, Maurice Pialat's Van Gogh is a leisurely paced look at the famous painter's final year. Pialat's portrait differs from many other films in that he shows Van Gogh (Jacques Dutronc) as being reasonably sane and he focuses on the everyday events of the painter's life and art. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

What is the problem with subtitles? Every review mentioned it like it was something new and unfortunate. A movie in another language without subtitles...that would be unfortunate. Get literate and watch something not involving a car chase and cop buddies for a change.

This is a beautiful movie but it is slow and like many others I was not aware it was subtitled. It was shot like a piece of art, the lighting and the landscapes are amazing. It felt like you were in a Renoir painting for most of the film. Overall this movie was painfully slow as Vincent was just a character foil for the cast of characters in his life. Outside of a few suicide attempts--the movie focused more on the flaws of his social network and not on his character. It also starts in the latter part of his life. Post the ear incident and obviously his time living with the prostitute. It showed Vincent as a caring and very family oriented person. He cares for children and graces the village idiot with time and a painting. Not for kids--so if they are doing research on Van Gogh you will have to do a lot of censoring.

I enjoyed this but as previously mentioned it leaves you feeling unsatisfied....beautiful settings and the english subtitles are no problem but this is a movie you must pay close attention to to grasp.
