There have been, will continue to be, many celebrations of Stephen Sondheim, but this one is so well done it will be long considered one of the best. Some of his musicals are short-changed or some not represented at all, but the show does the best it can in two hours and it's rare treat to see so many veterans of Sondheim's musicals reunited with this material. Patti LuPone (Mrs. Lovett in the last revival) cavorts with two former Sweeney Todds (Micheal Cerveris, George Hearn - where's Len Cariou?). A sextet of women in red (LuPone, Donna Murphy, Elaine Stricht among them) brings down the house with a series of "can-you-top-this" showstoppers as the concert comes to a close. David Hyde Pierce, who co-wrote the show, is the evening's witty and engaging host. Highly recommended for all theater fans. If you saw the PBS broadcast, you missed a lot of the show, but all of it's here and leaves you wishing for more.

I rented this twice. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing the first time. If you are a performer this DVD is an education. You will either learn from it or decide there's no more point in studying because you'll never achieve this level. Or, if not a student, simply sit back and enjoy what is without a doubt one of the most elegant and eloquent evenings in theatre. Joe B
