Breathless (1960)

Breathless (1960)
Member Rating:
The first feature film directed by Jean-Luc Godard and one of the seminal films of the French New Wave, Breathless is story of the love between Michel Poiccard, a small-time hood wanted for killing a cop, and Patricia Franchini, an American who sells the International Herald Tribune along the boulevards of Paris. Their relationship develops as Michel hides out from a dragnet. Breathless uses the famous techniques of the French New Wave: location shooting, improvised dialogue, and a loose narrative form. In addition Godard uses his characteristic jump cuts, deliberate "mismatches" between shots, and references to the history of cinema, art, and music. Much of the film's vigor comes from collisions between popular and high culture: Godard shows us pinups and portraits of women by Picasso and Renoir, and the soundtrack includes both Mozart's clarinet concerto and snippets of French pop radio. When Breathless was first released, audiences and critics responded to the burst of energy it gave the French cinema; it won numerous international awards and became an unexpected box-office sensation. ~ Louis Schwartz, Rovi

If you want to see a standard, action upon action Hollywood film, then avoid this one. If you want to see an intimate study of people and their surroundings, then watch this film. The cinematography in this movie is stunning. It isn't trite, like so many of the films that copy it. It is appropriate and beautiful. The acting is very strong. It isn't the American style of acting, though. It is very honest and raw. I appreciated the way Goddard spent much time on his characters. The center conversation scene is very long, about 20 minutes. However, I did not find it boring. I found the way Michel and Patricia interacted to be fascinating. This is a very good film. If you like meaningful and alternative cinema, then you should watch this film.

I can see how this would draw extreme like/dislike reactions. The camera work is jerky, and some of the dialogue seems conceited. But I still find Breathless intriguing two viewings later (try watching it with commentary once), and Jean Seberg's style here is timeless.

Jean-Paul Belmondo played a great role and was extremely stunning, as for the film it was full of great actors and screen writes.
