This is an excellent film, with an intellegently cut script and tightly edited production. Kudos to Messers Hunt and Nunn. Sir Ian McKellen in the title role does not disappoint. (I had very high expectations after having seen his Richard III.) The supporting cast is very strong and even gave me some delightful surprises in some of their choices. This Lear, while accessable to the relative neophyte, is satisfying for those of us who are hard-core Shakespeare devotees.

"King Lear," my favorite Shakespeare tragedy, is fleshed out in awesome fashion in this PBS film. Because it is a staged production, not filmed in various locations, I felt as though I were watching the action unfold from the front row at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. Ian McKellan gives the performance of his life. His intense portrayal of the mad king caught me up and wouldn't let go. I'll buy this DVD, for sure.
