A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969)

A Boy Named Charlie Brown (1969)
Member Rating:
The lovable characters from the popular comic strip by Charles M. Schulz appear in this full-length feature. The perennial failure Charlie Brown attends the National Spelling Bee and manages the worst sandlot team in the history of baseball. Linus loses and retrieves his security blanket. Snoopy the beagle dances wildly and plays shortstop. The irascible Lucy Van Pelt tricks Charlie Brown into kicking the football, but at the last minute she pulls it back and sends him flying onto his back. Although he loses the spelling bee, his friends gladly welcome Charlie Brown back to town upon his return. Nearly two-dozen songs are included. The characters remain true to the original works of Schulz, and great care was taken in matching the appropriate voices to the character's personalities. This is the first of many successful animated features of the gang from Peanuts. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Of course, for anyone over the age of 40, this is a huge slice of nostalgia. Who could forget the buzz at school each day after a Peanuts special? The timeless philosophical viewpoints of the Peanuts gang are truly a summation of adulthood. I read a review here where the author said they forgot "how depressing" this movie is. I think it's easy to find that here if you aren't careful. However, if you look more closely, you'll see that Charlie Brown remains the eternal optimist. No matter how discouraging or hopeless things may seem, Charlie Brown never, ever gives up. That's a lesson in positivity we can all learn from.

There aren't a lot of kid's movies that can make me laugh, but this one did. It had some very funny moments and a lot of good heartfelt moments. However, the flaw in this movie was it moved slower than Christmas. It's obvious that the folks who made the movie were skilled at making those 30 minute specials, but weren't used to ginning up enough filler for a feature movie. The pace reminded me of the Jim Carey Grinch movie - a good half hour long movie that didn't work well as a feature film.
