George Falconer (Colin Firth) feels lost. Not only is he still grieving the death of his longtime companion, Jim (Matthew Goode), but he's also a Brit teaching English at a California college. He's so distraught with heartbreak that he's decided to kill himself, and proceeds to get all his affairs in order while carrying on with what otherwise would be a normal day. He gives an unusually forceful lecture to his class, revealing enough that a perceptive student, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), senses something is wrong with the professor; collects his important financial papers from his bank; buys bullets for a handgun he owns; and makes a visit to his best friend (Julianne Moore). But throughout these methodical preparations, George keeps running into people -- a colleague's daughter, a attractive gay hustler, and the sympathetic Kenny -- who offer him glimpses of why he should stay alive. A Single Man is the directorial debut of legendary fashion designer Tom Ford. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

A visually gorgeous movie, equally matched by every single beautiful person in the film. The early 60s had such style, and each frame of the movie graceful captured the elegance of this period, as well as the luminous quality of struggle of the main character. The acting by Colin Firth and Julianne Moore were both masterful. I haven't been a fan of many of her recent movies, and her performance in this one was redeeming. I even liked her accent. Matthew Goode looked absolutely delicious! This film has an uplifting quality, and I would enjoy seeing it again.

Thought-provoking and serious, a sombre mood is held throughout. It's hard to believe that a movie that takes place in 1962 is a period piece -- no computers, no cell phones, gays are "invisible," closeted even in Santa Monica, and lots of smoking. What has not changed is brought to the screen by the extraordinary performances of the entire cast. Colin Firth deserved his Academy Award nomination for his deeply moving portrayal of George. What has not changed in the human condition is our fears -- witness the number of apocalyptic movies -- the importance of love relationships and the pain of loss. What George belatedly discovers is that when we let go of the past, life renews itself in the present. A good lesson to learn, but better not belatedly.

Quality acting, nice cinematography but difficult to relate to the storyline. Very little done with character development . Not everyones cup of tea unless you enjoy naked guys and think suicide is the answer to your emotions.
