The Bounty (1984)

The Bounty (1984)
Member Rating:
This fourth film dramatization of the 1789 mutiny aboard the H.M.S. Bounty is based not on the familiar Nordhoff and Hall book, but on Richard Hough's novel Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian. This time, the infamous Captain Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) is as strict a disciplinarian as ever. He is, however, no monster; faced with his crew's increasing laxity after an idyllic visit to Tahiti (the search for breadfruit takes second place to limitless sex with the island girls), Bligh is forced to resort to flogging and other such means to keep his men in line. Mr. Christian (Mel Gibson), formerly Bligh's friend, is of little use to the captain, having fallen in love with a native girl himself. Christian becomes the leader of the mutiny virtually in spite of himself; and when the mutineers try to seek refuge on Tahiti, they find that the local chief wants no part of them, which is why they settle for the nearly uninhabitable Pitcairn. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I enjoyed this movie alot. Its a different version of the mutiny story. I thought the acting was well done. I find it somewhat humorous that complaints about nudity would be written, when it clearly states that in the rating. Nevermind the historical portrayal of Tahitian life. This movie does not offer gratuitous anything, and is tastefully done. It provokes thoughts on just what did happen to Mr. Christian. If you like historical pieces, this movie is worth the 2+ hours.

Warning: LOTS of boobies in this one. Like, 100's of naked Tahitian girls with no shirts. Other than that, it was a wonderful movie, with excellent performances by everyone except Gibson, who I usually love but just feels flat in his role as Fletcher Christian. Fell in love with this genre after Master & Commander, read all 20 of those novels and have a thirst for more British seafaring. If you love the genre you'll love this, and otherwise you'll get a great movie with many of today's top Oscar talents well before they became Oscar laden talents. Highly recommended if you don't mind all the boobies!
