Garson Kanin's Broadway hit was transferred to the screen with only a few passing nods to the stricter censorship required by films. Judy Holliday won an Oscar for her portrayal of Billie Dawn, a strident, dim-bulbed ex-chorus girl who is the mistress of millionaire junk tycoon Harry Brock (Broderick Crawford). In Washington to put a few senators and congressmen in his pocket (the better to lay the groundwork for an illegal cartel), the rude-and-crude Brock realizes that the unrefined Billie will prove an embarrassment. Thus he hires idealistic but impoverished Paul Verrell (William Holden) to pump some intelligence and "class" into Billie. Paul does his job too well; by awakening Billie's social and political consciousness, he turns the girl into Brock's most formidable foe in his efforts to buy influence in DC. Along the way Paul and Billie fall in love. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

At times I thought this was a drama with humor, and other times I thought this was a comedy with a hard social commentary edge. I even thought this could have been a 50s version of My Fair Lady, but it never went quite that far with the Billie Dawn character. I note in the main description there were censorship issues, I just haven't figured out what they might have been. Broderick Crawford was perfectly crude, and Judy Holliday was completely daffy...Bill Holden was a bit too idealistic. In fact, I've decided I really don't like the early Holden movies. In the here and now I find it hard to believe Judy got an Oscar for this performance...but then, this ain't 1950. All in all, we enjoyed it.

I had to see who won Best Actress Oscar 1950, since Bette Davis didn't in her comeback role in "All About Eve." Judy Holliday won it for her terrific role as Billie Dawn in "Born Yesterday"--which turns out to offer an excellent case for literacy and an appreciation for Washington DC! I love William Holden even more now, and was delighted to discover that he was born in nearby O'Fallon, IL. The brilliant Holliday acted her actual age--29--in this film, and sadly died in 1965 at age 44.

I enjoyed this movie when I saw it in the era in which it was made. But now I found it a bit dated and the story was a bit slow at times. It had its moments of humor and was reasonable entertainment but not a great movie in this day and age.
