Member Rating:
Nine years after the Yuletide slasher flick Black Christmas, Porky's director Bob Clark once again took on the holiday genre, switching from gasps to laughs with A Christmas Story. Adapted from a memoir by humorist Jean Shepherd (who narrates), the film centers on Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), a young boy living in 1940s Indiana, desperately yearning for a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas. Despite protests from his mother (Melinda Dillon) that he'll shoot his eye out, Ralphie persists, unsuccessfully trying to enlist the assistance of both his teacher and Santa Claus. All the while, Ralphie finds himself dealing with the constant taunts of a pair of bullies and trying to not get in the middle of a feud between his mother and father (Darren McGavin) regarding a sexy lamp. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Not really sure if some of the people that reviewed this even watched the movie. Its my favorite Christmas movie right up there with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Don't let very small children watch this movie, because it will question the existence of Santa but so do most Christmas comedies. Its a movie that I think every person could relate to when they were a kid this age and its absolutely hilarious. Ignorant people won't like this movie, as you've seen in some of the reviews.

This one is a true classic! I am forced to remember my past. "Double Dog Dares", trying to run from bullies, the innocent Christmas wishes of children, etc all these things make this movie worth watching over and over. This movie will bring you back to your childhood and make you laugh like never before!

Wana know how lasting this movie is? A Christmans Story was released in '83, I was born in '81 and for as long as I can even remember holidays, this movie has been THE holiday movie my entire family can agree on. The dad, like my dad, is a little gruff and a bit tough around the edges but a big 'ole softy when it comes down to it. The mom, like my mom, tries to do whatever she can to keep the peace (and she's pretty darn good at it). Ralphie and Randy are just as rambunctious and mischievous as I remember my sister and I being. A Christmas Story is not your cheesy, syrupy holiday tale. It has its dear moments and in general a happy vibe, but it's a little tongue in cheek and rather sarcastic at times. Christmas is not Christmas until I pop this movie into the DVD player, I can tell you that. If you haven't seen it, for that matter even BOUGHT it, then there's no reason to delay. Start building your own lasting memories.
