Shelton seems to be following director Kelly Reichardt's lead (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy) with this quietly moving buddy film shot in the forest of the pacific northwest. Not quite as powerful as Reichardt's films, still there are some great moments of direction here as Shelton carefully develops the tension between two estranged friends. The film shows promise early on, including what I think may be one of the absolute best scenes in mumblecore history (as the two friends reunite over dinner in the forest cabin). But, the rest of the performance feels strained and leaves the film to fall flat. I gave it 3 stars just to encourage mumblecore fans not to miss a terrific scene.

Once again Lynn Shelton makes a very good movie about male friendship. This very low budget movie is well acted and directed and just the overall production is top notch. Reminded of movies like Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy.

What's with the sensationalist title? Was it meant to be sarcastic, or to evoke "My Brilliant Career"? Would this movie have been more interesting if it were about two women trying to salvage a friendship? I think not.
