A man and his marriage on the verge of a hilarious meltdown

How do you know when you're having a midlife crisis? Maybe it's when you can't remember exactly where your wife works - or whether she works at all. Or when your children have a more active sex life than you do. Or maybe it's when you start to hear the unspoken thoughts inside other people's heads.

Hugh Laurie (House) stars as Paul Slippery, an anxiety-ridden British doctor suffering from all those symptoms and more. His wife (Anna Chancellor, Four Weddings and a Funeral) has embarked on a new career and perhaps an extramarital affair or two. His three oversexed sons mock him without mercy. And at work he's tangled in red tape and tormented by a flaky colleague.

Guest stars include Stephen Fry, Laurie's partner-in-comedy from shows such as A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster, and Blackadder. With its delightful cast and zany repartee, Fortysomething turns the fears and foibles of middle age into high comedy of the kookiest kind.

Hugh Laurie shines in this very funny series about a doctor and his family - three late teen-20 something boys. This show explores the challenges of dealing with almost adult children, and the physical realities of being in your mid-forties. Supporting cast are very good too. The second episode has a brief appearance by Stephen Fry which is side splittingly funny.

this is a decent series that has some cute laughs, though i do think that in some places it is trying to be too cute, and actors were overacting just for the sake of it. i really wanted to like the show very much and hoped for more wry and cutting british humor, though it ended up being like some type of 'seventh heaven' british show. i know that this is an older series and that may account for humor that may be already outdated. leading character overacts like a child and is somewhat annoying to watch and it gets a bit tiresome in the end. i rented both discs and couldn't even watch the last two episodes of the second disc in the end. for more acerbic, fast paced, british humor, go with 'shameless.' it is outrageous, but has heart. disfunctionally loveable! :)

A really stupid premise, terrible acting and not at all funny. Hugh Laurie is normally a delight to watch and can be a terrific comedian, but NOT in this vehicle. Unbearably bad and I never even made it past episode 1.
