Beautiful cinematography and artful choregraphy. The story is somewhat slow but poetic with a tragic ending: similar to Hero.

This film is a visually stunning and beautifully choreographed period drama. Its original HK title is "The Banquet" and it came out in 2006 (around the same time as curse of the golden flower). Loosely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet this is not for those expecting an action movie. Zhang Ziyi does a good job with the role of empress Wan while Daniel Wu and You Ge give decent performances as the prince and his uncle, the Emperor. Even with beautiful sets and nicely choreographed fight sequences, that feel more like classical dance, this movie feels somewhat lacking. Its a decent watch but don't expect 'Hero' or 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.'

The plot is taken from Shakespeare's Hamlet, with the artistic flair of "Hero", but without as many extraordinary fighting scenes. Acting was good, and there are some good scences, but don't expect another "Hero".
