Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern play a pair of lovers on the run in David Lynch's surrealist road movie Wild at Heart. Cage's Sailor Ripley is a violent ex-convict with an Elvis Presley fixation who falls in love with Dern's Lula Pace Fortune, the daughter of a rich, but mentally unstable, Southern belle named Marietta (Diane Ladd, Dern's real-life mother). Just after Sailor is released from prison, where he was jailed for brutally killing one of Marietta's thugs, he and Lula take off on a wild cross-country trip, pursued by his parole officer, her mother, criminals, bounty hunters, and detectives. Along the way, Sailor and Lula have a lot of sex, share their pasts, share their respective obsessions for Elvis and The Wizard of Oz, and meet a lot of bizarre characters, including a seedy ex-marine (Willem Dafoe) who persuades Sailor to participate in a bank robbery. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

If you don't like Lynch, I don't think you're going to like this, but if you liked "Blue Velvet," "Mulholland Drive," etc., this is another solid picture from Lynch. No one makes pictures like Lynch, and even when his imagination runs wild, he's in complete control. This is basically a love story, road movie, pop culture/nostalgia trip rolled up into a surreal mix, complete with references to "The Wizard of Oz" and Elvis among others. The book's great, too, but this is a completely different, pure Lynch. Funny, odd, suspenseful, great stuff.

this along with blue velvet is (in my opinion) one of the better david lynch films. i guess i say that because most of it made sense. there were truly scary and mystifying scenes that built tension and troubled me. i thought the acting was really good although i normally don't care for nicholas cage. but the story is interesting and willem dafoe is excellent as a creepy bad guy. not for everyone but if you are a david lynch fan or want to see some of his work i recommend this and blue velvet to begin with.

I love it now as much as I did when it first came out. Diane Ladd is the best thing in the movie and that is saying alot. This is on my to buy list.
