This was a outstanding film about an extraordinary man. It portrayed the special "zone" that was established by John Robe and other Europeans/Americans to protect the Chinese that could squeeze into it from the Japanese who truly pillaged and destroyed Nanking in 1937 - the same kind of insane violence as in the Death March from Bataan. Subtitles do NOT take anything away from this.

A fantastic, intense film that brings to light a little known piece of World War II history. The film is in English, German, Chinese, and Japanese - a realitstic reflection of the diverse nationalities whose stories are told in this movie. But the focus is on the true story of a German Industrialist who has been stationed in Nanking for the 20 years prior to the Japanese invasion, and how he tries to save as many of his Chinese "workers" as he can.
