When Father Was Away on Business (1985)

When Father Was Away on Business (1985)
Member Rating:
The Yugoslavian When Father Was Away on Business (Otac na Sluzbenoh Putu) takes place in the early 1950s. The title is a euphemism: because of the strained relationship between Yugoslavia and the USSR, various private citizens have disappeared in the middle of the night, accompanied by the police. One such "vanishing" individual is Miki Manojlovic, the father of 6-year old Moreno D'E Bartolli, from whose viewpoint this story is told When Manojlovic, an employee in the labor ministry is whisked away to prison, his family reacts with pride, assuring one and all that he is "away on business" because of his fervent political beliefs. The sad truth: Manojlovic has ended up behind bars because of his sexual peccadilloes. The film details the tribulations of a fatherless family struggling to cope with the financial deprivations of Communism. Director Emir Kusturica won the Cannes Film Festival Golden Palm award for his work on When Father Was Away on Business. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I loved this movie tremendously, especially since it was adapted from true events. This movie had it all...adultery, political imprisonment, vengeance, botched suicide.....its gripping to say the least, watch it and be the judge.

Slow, low-quality ... did I say slow? Editing, people. Editing. Vastly overrated here. Looked like a college student film. I like foreigns, but not this one. Depressing because it just didn't start anywhere nor go anywhere, and created no empathy for any of the "actors." Some crazy sidebar subject matter here, too. I've traveled in the locations of this film; the people are better than shown. "Botched suicide" as mentioned by a reviewer? She was using a shoelace pull in a WC. Strange. And everything in this is old news.

This was a fantastic movie! Great characters and plot. Political and shows the tensions in a country during a time of revolution and changing politics and the impact it plays on the everyday lives of people. Relevance for today: One line: "There is no democracy when there isn't money in the coffers." holds true today in light of our present economic crisis. Interpret this comment as you see fit upon viewing this film. You might want to read up a bit on post war Yugoslavia and their political struggles to get a better understanding of what is going on in this movie. Well worth though.
