Blue Hawaii (1961)

Blue Hawaii (1961)
Member Rating:
One of Elvis Presley's most successful post-Army vehicles, Blue Hawaii casts Elvis as scion to a Hawaiian pineapple fortune. His snooty mother Angela Lansbury wants Presley to take over the management of the family business, but he'd rather make his own way in the world. He lands a job at a tourist agency, and incidentally finds time to dally with such lovelies as Joan Blackman and Nancy Walters. Steve Brodie, as ever, is on hand to inveigle Elvis into an outsized brawl. Among the songs featured in the film are the title number (originally written in 1937 for Bing Crosby) and "Can't Help Falling in Love." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Too bad they didn't just let Elvis act! 2 or 3 times the dialog actually hinted at a potential plot line. Fast forwarded 75% of it. The scenery is beautiful -- especially the '61 pre-tourism building boom view of the bay -- NO hotels dotting the skyline!

My daughter rented this because she loves Hawaii and has rented all sorts of movies, just because they are based in Hawaii. I hadn't seen this movie since the middle 70s. I've never been an Elvis fan, but I found it interesting because I had forgotten what was considered "normal" behavior back in those days; particularly the way men and women interacted with each other. The movie unintentionally reveals quite a bit about the era.

Good movie for light entertainment. It is especially good if you like Elvis. It does repeat the young man trying to make it on his own, without dad's help" them that is standard in Elvis movies.
