The Villain (1979)

The Villain (1979)
Member Rating:
The presence of Paul Lynde, in a small role, reveals more about the quality and tone of this film than the three top names. A farce with plenty of slapstick, it offers Kirk Douglas as a road agent dealing with a naive hero (a young Arnold Schwarzenegger) who is seemingly out of western serials in the '40s and a beautiful, sexy saloon girl (Ann-Margret). The silly jokes are the point, not the plot, though Needham includes some impressive stunts. Some of the most notable draw blatantly on Warner Brothers roadrunner and Daffy Duck cartoons; notably, the film came from Columbia, not Warner. The film's attempt at satire is too heavy-handed to have bite. ~ Bill Wu, Rovi

This is slapstick, physical comedy. Imagine if Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner came to life and started chasing each other. It's a playful, childish style of cowboy comedy and a classic. It's fun to watch Kirk Douglas, Ann Margret, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in this film. It is not in the same style as Blazing Saddles or Rustlers Rhapsody, which are adult comedies. I love all three movies, but just because they're Western themed they are not in the same category.

Was a very funny and light western. It shows Arnold playing the dumb hunk in comedy way before he became a big movie star. It runs on the Road Runner theme where Ann Margret and Arnold are trying to make their way. At the same time, the evil Kirk Douglas (very funny actually and you begin to want him to get them) tries to take the beauty away for himself, but he only gets hurt time after time. It is a nice, if light, comedy.

This is one of the greatest movies ever. Very funny. Kirk Douglas at his very best! I have watched many westerns with my Mama, but this one has stuck with me through the years.
