Love and life pose dilemmas for a handful of friends in the City of Lights in this romantic drama from French filmmaker Cedric Klapisch. Pierre (Romain Duris) has enjoyed a successful career as a dancer performing in Parisian nightclubs, but when he's diagnosed with a serious heart condition, his doctor warns him that the strain of his work could kill him. Pierre must reinvent his life, and as he ponders his future and his mortality, he turns to his sister, Élise (Juliette Binoche), a social worker and single mother, for help. Élise is facing some life changes of her own; she's tired of being alone, and has developed an infatuation with Jean (Albert Dupontel), a grocer who sells his wares in the city's open-air market. But Jean is recently divorced and is still preoccupied with his former wife, Caroline (Julie Ferrier). Pierre also finds himself falling from afar for a lovely college student named Laetitia (Melanie Laurent), but he has a rival for her affections in Roland (Fabrice Luchini), one of her professors, who is considerably older than her. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

What a beautiful movie! With the city of Paris as its backdrop, the movie follows the siblings of Duris and Binoche while interweaving the varied stories of other Parisians throughout the movie. I couldn't get enough of this unique film. Once again, Juliette Binoche is mesmerizing and the star-studded cast keeps you entertained with brilliant performances throughout. WOW!

Paris is one of the few cities you actually fall in love with, like San Francisco. This movie shows you so many different vantage points you feel like you are a voyeur given a secret peek most tourists never see. The story is interesting as it weaves what is happening to different people and like most independent and foreign films doesn't follow the predictable Hollywood formula. Although the stories are seamless as they switch between people, I feel some of the people hooking up were not realistic. Beautiful Parisian women dressed in elegant evening wear hooking up with smelly dock workers walking home at night. I'm not being snobbish, I will give a movie a lot slack, but when those two classes were thrown together it snapped me out of a moving story and reminded me I was watching a movie. This is still a wonderful film with great acting and a movie with a reminder of how we shouldn't take our everyday living experiences for granted.
