Vampyr (1931)

Vampyr (1931)
Member Rating:
Vampyr ranks in many circles as one of the greatest horror films of all time. Inspired by Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, the story concerns a mysterious series of killings, committed by a crone of a female vampire (Henriette Gerard). The story is told through the eyes of a holiday reveller (Julian West), who at first scoffs at the notion of a supernatural murderer, but who is eventually forced to believe that there are more things in heaven and earth. Dreyer offers few explanations of the phenomena he presents on screen: the strange and frightening happenings just happen, as casually as any everyday occurrence. As was his custom, Dreyer mostly uses nonprofessionals in his cast. Vampyr is available in a wide variety of severely edited and duped versions. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Taking into stride that this movie is over 70 years old aside, this movie was all right (the floating head was dang funny). The only problem I had was that the subtitles aren't available for everything that is said. They're only done for half of the dialog! So there is mysterious chanting, and you don't know what they're chanting (as an example). So, it's all right, but I don't feel that it's the greatest thing out there. But it's hard to make a complete review when I feel I didn't get "all" of the movie.

A MUST SEE! Go to the main menu and head right to"The Mascot" 1933 by Ladislaw Starewicz, a 25 minute "short" film. "Vampyr" also disappointed me, but "The Mascot" did not! It was WAY ahead of it's time in stop-motion animation, and if you like vintage Halloween (C1920-1930's) and appreciated the stop-motion in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, you'll LOVE this film. I found it very reminiscent of Pinocchio. A stuffed dog doll, belonging to the young daughter of a doll-maker, goes into the world on an adventure to retrieve the girl's desire: an orange; a treat her family is too poor to afford. About 10 minutes into the film, darkness falls and nightmarish creatues frolick. The devil himself appears and seems to be reaping wayward spirits (a la Disney's Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia). Considering it was made in 1933, the creativity and quality of the animation makes this a truly spectacular work.

Vampyr is a mediocre movie. Film snobs really want you to think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the proof just isn't in the pudding here. The picture is just terrible, I know for the time this is supposed to be great, but I've seen movies from the 30's that far out do this movie. This picture has been edited and destryoed over the years so badly that the story is barely followable. This is Dreyer's first "talkie" but you can't hear a thing and only about 40% of the dialigue is actually subtitled. Otherwise you read an on screen version of a vampire book so it might as well be a silent film. For me it was very distracting to watch and a little disappointing. Maybe there is a restored full length version out there that I would like better, but I'm pretty much disappointed by what I saw here.
