Though I was skeptical of this story as a musical, I really enjoyed this movie. The actors sang well, the songs were surprisingly good and relevant to the story, and I couldn't take my eyes off the visuals and costumes. Every actor/actress was perfect for his/her part, and I plan on watching this again.

I can see why people would be mesmerized by the goth backdrop of the movie, but between the terrible singing, mediocre music, and the pretentious ham acting, I had to turn it off halfway in. It would have been better a musical than an "opera", though it needs better writing either way. Where's the rock and where's the subtlety? Alexa Vega was a mediocre knockoff of Amy Lee playing a generic "rich girl slumming it finds the truth", and honestly, Paris Hilton? Wish I'd seen that before I rented. It seems to be aimed at emo tweens and comic book fans, so I guess I shouldn't expect much more. There are so many better dystopic movies, like Brazil or Children of Men, and much better dark musicals, like the new Sweeny Todd.
