You know those movies where you feel like the director was full of himself? "Oh, look how smart I am." The kind of movie where people say "you just didn't understand it". Well, this is one of those movies. I did understand it, it just sucks. It is painful to watch expressionless actors in a dreary setting spouting uninteresting dialogue. Given the choice, I would have rather drank spoiled milk.

I wish I had read the others review before I wasted this entry on my Que. Not much of a story going on, the characters are boring, and you really could care less what happens to them. I wasted a full hour thinking, "it's got to get better, there has to be some plot to this movie..?" Don't waste more than 20 minutes, if you decide to rent this because I promise you, it doesn't get any better than the first 20 minutes. Awful movie

I saw this film during its theatrical run in 1989 after reading several glowing critical reviews... and hated every moment I spent sitting in that theater. Stories about psychologically disturbed characters can be very compelling when done in an interesting way. "Sweetie" is neither compelling nor interesting-- just a young director's self-indulgent mess. For all the other good movies Jane Campion has done, I can't encourage people to avoid this frustrating, bad-film-school quailty movie enough. If I could give it negative stars, I would... And with several 1 or 1/2 star reviews written here, how is it that the Blockbuster member rating is 3.5 stars? something smells fishy here, especially since this little-seen film came out on DVD soooo many years after it hit theaters. what gives?
