Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Super Mario Bros. (1993)
Member Rating:
The huge success of the video games featuring animated Italian plumbers the Mario Brothers led to this $42 million live action movie. The two brothers (Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) live in Manhattan and are chasing Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis), who wears a necklace made from a meteor fragment. Its powers can free a race of reptilian creatures from the city's sewers. The villainous ruler of the creatures, who are descendants of dinosaurs, is King Koopa (Dennis Hopper). Koopa has kidnapped Daisy and taken her to the underworld of Dinohattan, which is rat-infested and strewn with garbage. The Mario Brothers must overcome many obstacles, just as they do in video games, to free the princess. The film spares no expense with its use of animatronic monsters and high-tech special effects. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Nice film! But it gave me mixed feelings. Pros: First of all the plot and the character design where brilliant. Including the speical effects. They were quite impressive - even compared with today's standareds! The plot moves on with that videogame-adventure feel and action. There is never a dull momment. It keeps you on your seats cheering for Mario and Luigi! Cons: Mario fans who are looking forward to something close and true to the video game will be a bit dissapointed with his movie. A lot of the characters and story concepts vaguely reflect the classic video game world and characters. Luigi seems like a teenager. Where was Princes Toadstool? She was replaced by Princess Daisy. There is a lot of seductive content (especially the club sences) I found it a bit too strong for a movie geared for kids. Overall, it is good. Dispite the cheesy re-creation from the real videogame characters and world, it is a film well worth watching. Mario Bros.!

AFter hearing about it, the first thing that came to mind was the horrible TV show with Captain Lou Albano of WWE fame.I was WAY wrong-Not just the head three actors but ALL of the actors and actresses were EXCELLENT in this movie -I believe that they pulled off the most unexpected adaptation ever, from Princess Daisy to King Mushroom they had every part assigned perfectly. Dennis Hooper as King Koopa was equivalent to Jack Nicholson as the Joker. They even had the world of the Mushroom Kingdom convincing with the odd citizens, unusual vehicles( obviously cardboarded present vehicles,I admit..),and the wardrobe that was faintly recognizable but believable.I gave this movie 4 stars and not 5 because they didnt make a sequel, and at the time Super Mario Bros games had/have a great fanbase.I hope they release this film on Blu Ray soon with new material...I reccomend this not only as a fan but as a father of three.
